How is it that I am just now reading The Glass Castle? I started it yesterday and ended up sitting up until 1am to finish it. It was so good. I don't know why I like reading stories about someone's crazy, dysfunctional childhood, but I do. I've read Angela's Ashes several times. This was sort of the American version of that book. I think the thing I like about both of these books is that the author still loves his/her parents very much. There is anger and bewilderment but also love.
Also, I think it makes me feel better about my own life. I quit crabbing about people stealing my towel at the pool or that I spent this morning scraping chewing gum out of my dryer. (I always check the pockets, but that damn piece of Super Bubble eluded me).
Anyhoo, if you haven't read this wonderful book yet, you really should.

loved glass castle, i love this genre of books. my friends think i am crazy. have you read stolen lives ? i have tons of books like this if you want more. heartwrenching, survivor type stories. my all time favorite is First They Killed My Father, it is about cambodia and the khmer rouge. amazing read.
First They Killed My Father
Stolen Lives
If I am Missing of Dead
Burned Alive
Lucky
If you can not find any of the above and need the author let me know. I have First They Killed My Father if you want it (but i would want it back b/c I love it)the others i dont have anymore.
I read it and it wigged me out. can you imagine your parents surfing the dumpster next to the apartment where you live on Oark Ave? CRAZY!!!!
I hope you get your pretty towel back! Enjoy your summer!
I've had the gum in dryer thing happen TWICE..it's awful!
I liked that book too. Crazy family books are great for getting a little perspective on your own family.
But the ability to forgive in that book is hard for me to get my mind around.
My mom and sister are making me read this after I made them PROMISE there isn't any childhood abuse (they said it's more like neglect?).
I'll let you know what I think!
it was good - and crazy too... I can not even imagine!
This book is on my list!
