Last night when I went I went to give the little one a bath I realized we had entered a new phase of toddlerhood. A sample sized tube of toothpaste was sitting at the bottom of the toilet. My husband happened to be standing there as I fished it out. Since baby loves his bath and was getting anxious about getting in the tub I asked my husband if he could throw it away for me. First he asks, "Are you sure you don't want to save it?" Um, for what? My museum of things I've fished out of the toilet? This is not the depression buddy. It's a half used sample of Crest Kids that the 7 year old got at the dentist a few weeks ago. Yeah. It's trash. Of course, I didn't say any of this, I just gave him my look that says, "Seriously?" So, he drops it in the trashcan next to the toilet.
Now, people, is it just me or do all moms know that you cannot throw that away in that can? First of all, when my older son goes in there later to brush his teeth, I guarantee you that he will fish it out of the trash and use it. Plus, next time the little one gets in the bathroom he will see it in the trash and put it back in the toilet. So I told him, "This needs to go in the kitchen trash. Downstairs. Probably hidden under some other items." Then he gives ME the look that says I am incredibly anal/insane, but he humors me. Does anyone else's household work this way? Do your children leave things in the trash or do they constantly pull things out as if each can were their own personal prize box?
Can I get a witness?

No, but my husband will...it bugs me, you'd think he grew up in the depression! Thanks for putting a funny spin on it and making me laugh!
In our house, it's my husband who cannot throw stuff away--especially the damn toothpaste! He will work a tube until there is aboslutely nothing in it before tossing it. My daughter (almost 8) and I agree that he's totally nuts and when her tube gets too difficult for her to squeeze, we toss it together, hiding it under some tissues, and pinky promise not to telll him. If he found it, he'd be very upset.
I was actually relieved when I read to the end of this post. At first, I was afraid I knew where the story was going--that I had been asked (or, more accurately) told to throw the toothpaste in question into the kitchen trash and I said, "yes, dear," and proceeded to walk somewhere. But, I wondered as I read, where did I go? I couldn't remember. Did I throw it in the kitchen trash? Or did I wander off and get distracted by something (probably something related to food) and unconsciously set the tube down on the counter in OUR bathroom or somewhere similar, having totally forgotten that I was supposed to throw it out.
This happens a lot. And it's not because I don't listen--I do. I'm just easily distracted. Honest.
So, when I found out that the soiled toothpaste did not end up getting actually used by someone to brush their teeth and actually made it into the desired trash can (as far as we know, at least), I was thoroughly relieved.
Phew.
Trashcan, toilets - the BabyGirl puts it wherever she wants. And if you read my blog you'll remember that I have a watch and a few pairs of earrings that are STILL missing......
I have my dogs for that!!! Trust me, they'll eat ANYTHING.
Ha! You are so funny.
